The White Cat

Her white fur was dirty and matted, and she was hungry again.

Her ribs could be seen through her thick coat of fur,

She paused a moment, remembering when.

She once had a home, all cozy and warm.

Her humans had loved her, fed her, and kept her safe.

Then something happened, she didn’t know what,

To make them abandon her,One cold September morn.

A few days after, she had delivered her kittens,

Five in all, all different shades.

They nursed, and cried, and grew,

While their mother remembered where she had been.

She was still walking, looking for food,

When she saw a light from a window.

Nervous and tired she crept to the house,

Hoping for something, To feed her brood.

She decided to return tomorrow, when it was light,

Maybe they had trash she could nose through.

Returning to her babes, she cuddled up in the leaves,

Licked each of them and mewed goodnight.

The next day she left and found the house.

There was a woman and a man, laughing and talking,

The white cat paused, wondering if she

Should just go catch a mouse.

The Man looked friendly, the woman did too.

Hoping to go unnoticed, she walked to the side,

Just then, the woman said, “Honey, look over there,

I saw a white cat. What should I do?”

The man told his wife to get something for her to eat,

The woman came back with a can of food, Tuna!

The white cat, still nervous and scared, moved forward,

Looked down at the can, and took a seat.

“Poor baby”, the woman said,

“She looks like she hasn’t been fed in a while.

She put her hand to the white cat’s head, stroking her fur

And petting her head.

The white cat relaxed and purred,

Enjoying the attention and the food.

She gazed at the woman and then could not believe,

What next she heard.

“Do you think we could keep her?”

the woman asked the man.

“Don’t see why not,” he replied. The woman

smiled,

“She’s so beautiful, who would drop her off like this?”

The man didn’t answer, just replaced her food with a new can.

The white cat returned every day for a week,

Regaining her strength and her trust.

At first she was scared,

But now she wasn’t so meek.

She decided to trust them, so one cold day,

She picked up a kitten by the scruff of the neck.

She walked him the distance to the house,

And placed him in some hay.

When she had brought the rest,

She went to the house and meowed at the door,

The woman opened up, and said, “Hello Precious, where have you been?”

The white cat turned, and led them to her nest.

“Oh, look!”, the woman exclaimed. “Kittens!”

She picked one up,

gave it a kiss, a hug, and said, “Are you babies hungry?”

She moved the kittens into the house and made them a bed,

Finding them some food, they proceeded to sup.

From that day forward, the white cat was loved again,

fed again, and kept safe and warm.

She learned to trust again and love again.

The white cat was happy and content,

All because someone had dropped her off, one cold September morn.
